Each year, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago dedicates a whole week to helping increase financial literacy and education throughout the Chicagoland area.

In April 2009, topics ranged from teaching kids to save, to surviving a job loss to the benefits of renewable energy vehicles. There was so much interest in financial literacy classes that a new group was formed for DuPage County and sponsored 40 events. Some of the highlights from last year were:

  • Approx. 600 events were offered, up about 15% from 2008
  • 87,000+ people attended events in the Chicagoland area, triple for 2008 attendance
  • 71,000 Chicago Public School students led the way to the biggest MSW campaign ever-the Save, Chicago! Challenge from City Treasurer Stephanie Neeley
  • 3,500 kids took part in the JA in a Day events held by Junior Achievement
  • About 18 adults attended every classroom event, with several topping out with more than 50 people

There were more than 380 events for adults and almost 200 for children.

Matthew Sapaula, Inc. has been honored to be a Money Smart Week Partner with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for the past three years.  Personally, I have seen lots of growth, excitement and progress over this short time.
