Celebrating the Life of “The Voice” – Spreading our Wings

This is a continuation of special series of blog posts capturing the experiences and activities of the Sapaula-Carballo family handling the unexpected death of a beloved family member, sparking an unplanned international, trans-Pacific family reunion.  This is what we at Money Smart Radio call, “Building the Family Bank”.  We will enlighten the celebration of the life of my late uncle, a pillar of the media in print, radio and TV broadcast journalism – Cris “The Voice of Davao City” Sapaula.

It seems that I have been working my team here, a little too hard.  They jokingly comment about having no sleep this week! I am so proud of them, however, they are really doing a great job making my life easier.  Jong Tulibas, our videographer/editor and Reikko Navarro,  web designer/developer has shown me throughout our stay here the typical, hard-working, non-stop-attention-to-detail work ethic that is the staple of the Filipino working class.  Special thanks to my team leader here, Jefferson Faudan, who helped put my schedule together in less than days!!

We begin this morning with a radio interview with DJ George Booke on Davao City’s MIX FM 105.9.  It was 80s Friday and of course, I had to special request the Michael Jackson music throughout my interview!  We talked about how to stretch the budget, make money last longer and value the relationships you have in your life.  They were so kind to offer me a great cup of coffee, didn’t realize I was missing my morning cup of joe, thanks guys!

Celebrating the Life of “The Voice” – Meeting with the Media

I had a great time at my first press conference held overseas.  At the Dimsum Diner off Torres Rd, journalists from GMA-TV, Sun Star Davao, Mindanao Times and Digital Photographers were present.  I had the opportunity to meet with the media and discuss the legacy created by my Uncle Cris “The Voice” Sapaula, the importance of personal financial savings, entrepreneurship and business usage of social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.

This is a special series of blog posts capturing the experiences and activities of a how the Sapaula-Carballo family handles the death of a beloved family member, sparking an unplanned, international, trans-Pacific family reunion.  It is my intent with this series to help share and enlighten the celebration of the life of my late uncle, a pillar of the media in print, radio and TV broadcast journalism – Cris “The Voice of Davao City” Sapaula.

I was fighting through traffic,  simultaneously attempting to gather my thoughts and notes together as I headed to the radio station for my morning show on Chicago’s AM 850, Money Smart Radio.  I was fired up, looking forward to sharing some new money tips during the MoneyN’Motion Moment with Matt and interviewing top life insurance lawyer, Frank Darras,  during the Expert’s Corner.

As most Chicagoans would do, driving inbound to the city, I was gesturing to drivers all around me and barking orders as if they could hear me, in orchestrating how the traffic flow should be moving quicker than it should.  A futile effort, nevertheless, but it made me feel better.  (Some call this road rage? )

Victory for Veterans: Taking the Fight from the Battlefield to Success on the Homefront

The taste of freedom is different for those that have trained, fought and sacrificed for it.  But the transition from fighting abroad to entering civilian life, is a difficult dynamic for many U.S. veterans.  Having been an active duty U.S. Marine deployed to the Middle East and Africa with Special Operations units, I cannot deny I thought about the status of my finances, my future and uncertain paths at least once or twice.  Furthermore, once my tour of duty was over, I found it difficult to be in an atmosphere that lacked mutual accountability, discipline and committed teamwork as the Marine Corps provided me for 10 years.

Inspired by Steve Sepessey of Cleen Macheez visit to the radio show  last week, we decided to dedicate this week to helping United States military personnel and support units with specific insights, encouragement and actionable steps to be a hero in their homeland.
